Approved Siege Engines 6 Siege engines include such things as ladders, battering rams, siege towers, catapults and trebuchets.

Siege engines are required in order to attack any territory that has Forts defending it. Siege engines can also be used in defence when you have at least 3 forts. Additionally, when Navy attacks a territory with 5 or 6 forts, Siege engines with that Navy can be used to bombard the harbour defences.

When you capture a territory that contains Siege engines, those Siege engines then become part of your army.
Approved Cavalry 12 Cavalry are the strongest troops in your army, and represent mounted infantry, landed knights, and minor royalty.

Cavalry is required in order to launch any siege by land, even if the Cavalry does not take part in the battle. It is also required when attacking an enemy army that contains Cavalry. In this way, deploying Cavalry can be an effective tactic to block the progress of your opponents, until those opponents raise their own mounted troops.

Raising large numbers of Cavalry can also be effective, as they are difficult to overcome in combat. Cavalry receives 1 to all dice rolls in open field combat, and in many battles involving Infantry, Cavalry is unassailable (i.e. - can do damage but cannot be killed).
Approved Navy 12 Navies are the seafaring military force of an army, and include craft such as cogs, carracks, triremes, and longboats.

Navies are required to transport troops (Infantry / Cavalry / Siege Engines) across water, and are also required when attacking foreign shores. Navies on a coastal territory (i.e. at port) can block enemy armies from landing, and so make a good defence on islands and secluded coastlines.

When you capture a land territory that contains Navy, that Navy then becomes part of your army, as you have captured it at port. When you destroy a Navy at sea, any Infantry / Cavalry / Siege engines on the enemy fleet sink and are destroyed.
Approved Forts 6 Forts are the fortified defences of your territories, with more forts providing better defences:

1 fort - Wooden ramparts
2 forts - Wooden pallisade with gatehouse
3 forts - Stone walls, gatehouse and docks (if coastal)
4 forts - Stone walls, gatehouse, parapets, and a harbour (if coastal)
5 forts - Curtain walls, gatehouse, towers, parapets, and a fortified inner harbour (if coastal)
6 forts - Large curtain walls, gatehouse, high towers, parapets, and fortified inner and outer harbours (if coastal)

When you capture a territory that contains Forts, you capture the Forts as well. This is important to keep in mind when deciding how you will besiege a territory protected by Forts, as some siege battles run the risk of destroying the defences.
Approved Infantry 24 Infantry are the common footsoldiers of Medieval times. Armed with swords, axes, and other small hand-held weapons, they are the most prevalent troops in an army.

Infantry gain no specific advantage in battle, but are cheap and plentiful. Large numbers of Infantry form an effective defence, and in sufficient numbers can prevent powerful Cavalry battle types that aim to divide and conquer the defending force, such as Flanking Manoeuvre and Hound Army.
