Cavalry too weak?

Postby pokyha » Wed Apr 30, 2014 9:58 pm

Cavalry cost 96
Infantry cost 36

These are your two main attacking troops. 1 cavalry equals 2.66 Infantry.

The main advantage for having cavalry is to attack and defend against infantry.
The "cavalry charge" and the "chase cavalry" are the two best attacking options for this troop type. Giving you a 4 vs 2 and a 2 vs 2 respectfully. These do give you good odds but will they give you 2.66 attack rate against infantry? I do not know the exact probability but I feel like cavalry are too weak.

Also the main attacking option I use and I think is most used is "field battle", this gives no benefit to Cavalry, also Cavalry has weaknesses when using the "siege" attack.

I think Cavalry is either to weak or Infantry too powerful (works both ways).

I do not know what to price them but it needs some discussion.

Yep, I think cavalry is too weak as well. The current troop valuation algorithm doesn't take into account the battles available and how the troops are involved in those battles. I imagine this is where the problem lies when valuing troops.

The current rules for field battle are:
Attacker (4) - Cavalry, Infantry, Cavalry, Infantry, Cavalry, Infantry, Cavalry, Infantry
Defender (3) - Cavalry, Infantry, Cavalry, Infantry, Cavalry, Infantry
Attacker requires at least 1 infantry
Attacker requires at least 1 cavalry
Defender requires at least 1 infantry
Defender prevents with at least 1 fort

We could probably fix the field battle problem if we changed it to this:
Attacker (5) - Infantry, Infantry, Infantry, Cavalry, Infantry, Cavalry, Cavalry, Cavalry
Defender (4) - Infantry, Infantry, Infantry, Cavalry, Cavalry
Attacker requires at least 1 infantry
Attacker requires at least 1 cavalry
Defender requires at least 1 infantry
Defender prevents with at least 1 fort
That way, it favours having a couple of cavalry whenever you deploy infantry, otherwise the attacker can go 5v3 against you.

Also, at the moment a cavalry charge is defined thus:
Attackers (4) - Cavalry, Cavalry, Cavalry, Cavalry
    Defedners (2) - Infantry, Infantry
Attacker requires at least 1 Cavalry
Defender requires at least 1 Infantry
Defender prevents with at least 1 Cavalry
Defender prevents with at least 1 Forts

I'm amenable to having a new attack called something like "Harry Infantry" with rules like this:
Attackers (3) - Cavalry, Cavalry, Cavalry
    Defenders (1) - Infantry
Attacker requires at least 1 Cavalry
Defender requires at least 1 Infantry
Defender prevents with at least 1 Cavalry
Defender prevents with at least 6 Infantry
Defender prevents with at least 1 Forts

This would also encourage having cavalry with small amounts of infantry, as your infantry could get easily picked off if they are by themselves in groups of 1 - 5

I like the "harry infantry" Idea, although it would hinder my strategy I rarely buy cavalry.

The I deas work well.
Now I understand how the attacking systems work more lol.

Why can't you just reduce the price of cavalry or is there some complex coding involved?

It's worked out by an algorithm, with the cost primarily based on the number of each troop you can deploy. I could up cavalry to 18, that would balance it out too. As I said, the current algorithm is a bit naive in that it doesn't consider battle types. I think a slight change to battle types might be of more values in that it would enrich the current Medieval Era rules and make for a better game.

Along those lines, I think we need two siege types, one that involves just infantry, one that has cavalry and infantry, that way you could hold back your expensive cavalry when storming over fort-riddled territories if you wanted.

With the changes to Medieval Era v4, I think we can put this one to rest now. Cavalry now have a blocking role in defensive sieges, and have much more involvement in unlocking / blocking certain attack types. It's rare to see games without cavalry scattered over the map now.
