FAQ and Terminology

What are Background Projects?

Background Projects are a project type on Art of War that allows users to create content that is used as background art throughout the site. Backgrounds on each page are randomly selected from official deployed Background Projects each time you visit a page.

Who can create Background Projects?

Only users who have Artist rights can create Background Projects.

What restrictions are there on background image sizes?

Background images must be no more than 1.5Mb in size, and must be between 160-2000px wide and 120-1600px high.

Are there any other restrictions?

Yes. Background images must be on an alpha background. If you are unsure on how to do alpha backgrounds on an image that already has a flat background colour, here is a tutorial for Photoshop:

  1. Take your image and invert the color (ctrl + i), then marquee select the image and copy it (ctrl + c).
  2. In your layers panel, there is a channels tab, click the tab and then look at the bottom of the channels panel and click create new channel. It will default to Alpha 1, but you can name it anything you want.
  3. Click on that channel (make sure that it is the only one selected) and paste (ctrl + v)the copied image into the alpha channel.
  4. Deselect the image (ctrl + d, then click on the alpha channel to highlight it, then click on the icon at the bottom of the tab called load channel as selection (two icons to the left of the new channel button).
  5. Go back to the layers tab and create a new layer, then select a paint brush and make the paint brush very large. Once you have a large paint brush, paint the selection with a color of your choice.

Thanks to gattigen at Dream In Code for that tutorial.

What settings are available in Background Projects?

Background Projects have 4 available settings, and all are compulsory:

  1. Horizontal AlignThis setting determines whether the image anchors to the right, left, or centre of the page. This setting is ignored when the Axial Orientation is set to Horizontal.
  2. Vertical AlignThis setting determines whether the image anchors to the top, bottom, or middle of the page. This setting is ignored when the Axial Orientation is set to Vertical.
  3. Axial OrientationThis setting determines which axis the image will stretch to fit. There are three settings: Horizontal, Vertical, and None. If set to None, then the image is displayed at it's normal size. If set to Horizontal, then the image stretches to fit the horizontal axis, and scales on the vertical axis to retain the proportions. If set to Vertical, then the image stretches to fit the vertical axis, and scales on the horizontal axis to retain the proportions.
  4. OpacityThis setting determines the opacity of the image. The setting can take vales between 0-100, and represents the opacity in percent. In other words, 100% is opaque, and 0% is invisible. A value of 30% is given as the default value.
